What Does The Bible Say About Homosexual Marriage?

June 26, 2011

Last week: What Does The Bible Say About Abortion?.

Homosexual marriage licenses are now granted by five states (Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont) plus the District Of Columbia. On Thursday, June 24, the New York Senate voted to legalize homosexual marriage, so New York becomes the sixth state to do so. The Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 defines marriage as a legal union only between one man and one woman as husband and wife. Many defend the right of homosexuals to marry, others oppose it. Many simply do not care one way or the other. What does the Bible say about homosexual marriage?
To answer the question of what the Bible says about homosexual marriage, we must first see what it says about homosexual activity. In Genesis 19:1-11, there is an account of a visit of two men to Sodom. Lot invited them to stay with him that night. That evening, the men of the city surrounded Lot's house and demanded, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them" (Genesis 19:5, NIV). Lot responded, "I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly" (v. 7). Lot considered their demands so wicked that he offered his virgin daughters to them instead. The two men, who were actually angels, had come to warn Lot, Abraham's nephew, that the city would be destroyed because of its sinfullness (Gen. 13:13; 20-33). Jude writes, Jude 7 (NKJV), "As Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire." So, Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed, partly, because of sexual immorality. Genesis 19 says that one of their acts of sexual immorality was that of homosexuality. Under the Mosaic Law, according to Leviticus 20:13, those who commited homosexual acts were to be put to death. The New Testament also condemns homosexuality. Please read Romans 1:18-32. In verses 26 and 27, Paul writes:
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
Though certainly not to give us license to harm homosexuals, but to show the seriousness of this, and a number of other sins, Paul says in v. 32, "Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them."
What does the Bible say about homosexual activity? It says that it is sin! What does the Bible say about homosexual marriage?
God's plan from the beginnig has been that marriage be between one man and one woman. After God had created man, and woman as a suitable helper for him (Genesis 2:18-22, NIV), Adam, the first man, said, in Gen. 2:23-24, "This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." Jesus' definition of marriage is also a union between one man and one woman. In Mark 10:6-7 He told a group of pharisees who had asked Him about His stand on divorce:
"But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder."
Paul writes the same thing in Ephesians 5:30-31. So, the Bible clearly teaches that marriage is to be between one man and one woman.
What should the Christian's attitude be toward homosexuals? We should not be homophobic (i.e., obsessively hostile toward homosexuality). Our attitdude should be an attitude of love, as Christians should love all who sin. We should pray for them, and teach them the right way to live, as we have opportunity. But we must not hate them. We must not seek to do them harm. It should always be the Christian's disire that all sinners repent and turn to God.
